How can Pilates be beneficial in pregnancy?

Pregnancy PilatesExercise can have profoundly positive effects on your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing during pregnancy. Pilates in particular is a safe and gentle form of exercise that can help you maintain your existing strength, posture and flexibility, whilst helping you prepare your body for the demands of pregnancy and childbirth. Just some of the benefits of Pilates during pregnancy include;

strengthening your abdominal muscles - to help you cope with the weight of your growing baby

reducing back pain - by strengthening deep abdominal muscles that stabilise your back and pelvis

strengthening your pelvic floor - which will help to support your bowel, bladder and uterus as your baby grows

relaxing and controlling your breathing - to help with relaxation during pregnancy and labour

helping with balance - by strengthening your core and making you feel more stable as your baby grows

Post Natal Pilates

Pregnancy, childbirth and caring for a newborn are all physically and emotionally demanding. While the idea of beginning or returning to an exercise programme may not be high on your list of priorities, it can offer a number of physical, mental and emotional benefits. Pilates is particularly beneficial in helping post natal women due to its low impact, focus on developing core strength and relaxing breathing techniques. Following childbirth, Pilates can help you:

correct muscular imbalances - arising from the steadily increasing weight of your growing baby and other physical changes

improve posture - which is increasingly challenged during pregnancy due to the increased weight of your growing baby and breasts.

improve core stability - by gently strengthening your core muscles which have been stretched during pregnancy.

rehabilitate the pelvic floor muscles - which have undergone the strain of supporting the baby's weight during pregnancy and which may have been damaged during birth.
